Rooms by the sea reproduction – complete!

I’m happy to call this one done! I love the way that the scumbling adds a softness to Hopper’s work. I feel as though I’ve recreated the Hopper-ness of the piece, without it being an exact copy. My biggest take-home from this project has been gaining command over the use of linseed oil, which I look forward to incorporate in to my own painting practice.

  1. Nice work Marian, thats really cool. Your blog is really showing me there’s so much I don’t know about painting.

Your recreation seems to have quite a different “white balance” (not sure if this term is correct here) to the original. Is that a product of your paint choices, some other factor or the white balance of the camera you took it with?

Love your work, keep it up!

    1. Hey Chris! Thanks for stopping by 😀

It’s a combination of a bit of everything – different camera (and as you point out, a different white balance), reproducing the work from a poster print rather than a digital print, as well as having to make a “best guess” based on the historical information available. I also deliberately warmed it up in the final stages because YOLO.

The white in the “original” (in digital form) I find really quite harsh; however when I look through various books with Hooper prints in it, the white balance is somewhere closer to this.

Come and have a look at the “original” at our place some time! 🙂 🙂
